It has been YEARS since I did a personal collaboration project.
I have had this one in mind for over a year now, ever since I saw Ironhead post this concept maquette that Jose sculpted for the original Fantastic 4 film.
It is no secret that I am obsessed with everything Ironhead Studios produces, in particular their helmets and masks. Jose Fernandez is a wizard and in my humble opinion, everything he does is absolute gold.
The goal I had in mind for this piece was to honor the design Jose created and create something that is photoreal but not in the sense of a photoreal living creature, but in the sense of a real maquette with a little bit of extra texture and material flair.
I want to give an enormous shout out to my friend Sergey Ponomarenko who agreed to take on the monumental task of modeling and sculpting this fella based on Jose's design. I couldn't be happier with what Sergey has done, it is absolutely STUNNING!
We plan to take on another Ironhead/Jose design for our next project so more to come on that later!
The Thing was rendered in Arnold for Maya and consists of 7 4K UDIMs.
Texture work was done in Substance Painter.
Thanks for looking and we hope you like it!
