CHAPPIE - Textures & Lookdev

I finally have some time to create a new page for the lookdev and textures for one of the coolest assets I've ever textured.

Having done the droids on Elysium, Neill and Image Engine learned a lot about what did not work when we built those droids, which we ended up building from the ground up twice due to a complete design change half way through production (ouch).

On Chappie, Neill asked Image Engine to take the concepts created by WETA and see them through to completion with regards to precisely how Chappie articulated physically. Our lead modeler Jeff Tetzlaff was responsible for building the production model from these stills.

Typically this sort of asset would be practically built first and then handed off to us . But what was totally unique about this process is that the model Jeff built would be THE precise model WETA Workshop would receive to 3D print and build practically. The model Jeff built was air tight and was able to articulate to a surgical precision.
